Are you someone who feels constantly busy…but you don’t feel like your time is being spent on the things that matter the most to you?
Lack of time has come up several times in my group and private coaching sessions, so I thought it was worth addressing here on the podcast this week. In this episode of the Keep Talking Revolution Podcast, I’m sharing some observations and tips from people I know who have become masters of time management.
I want you to imagine that you’ve committed to participating in something important to you. This isn’t just a pointless obligation. It’s something that matters. Maybe it matters for your health, your mental well-being, your financial security or an important relationship.
The time arrives…and something comes up. Maybe your kids are being particularly ornery today and you can’t step away. Or your mom calls you and she’s in a crisis. Or you’re feeling behind at work and get wrapped up in completing a project.
The time passes, and you’ve missed the opportunity to participate in that thing that was important to you. And you say to yourself, “It’s just so hard for me to find the time to…(do that thing).”
What falls in that category for you? Is it exercise, a weekly date night, time for a hobby, or hanging out with a friend just for fun?
When it feels like you’re always changing your commitments and priorities at the last moment, I suggest that you ask yourself:
- Am I committed to the things that are important to me?
- Have I decided what to do when my commitments are challenged? And
- Am I communicating my commitments with my people in a clear and kind way?
Reflecting on these three questions will give you the insight you need to make some adjustments and get better at mastering your time.
